The Five Sak Yant Tattoo Rules

If you’re planning to get a Sak Yant tattoo in Bangkok and receive a blessing from a monk or Ajarn, it’s important to be aware of the Sak Yant tattoo rules that must be followed.

There are five primary Sak Yant tattoo rules to adhere to after the tattoo and blessing have been completed. Failing to follow these simple guidelines will result in the loss of the spiritual power conferred by the blessing. The Sak Yant tattoo rules are as follows:

1) Do Not Kill Another Living Creature

This rule encompasses all sentient beings, from humans to the smallest insects. However, it does not prohibit the consumption of meat that has been slaughtered by someone else.

2) Do Not Steal or Lie

This is fairly straightforward and ties back to the first rule of causing no harm to others. The lying part can be challenging as we sometimes lie to protect others’ feelings, but to maintain the blessing’s power, these rules must be adhered to at all times.

3) Do Not Be Unfaithful

This rule includes avoiding marital affairs, cheating on partners or loved ones, and even refraining from desirous thoughts. Only two unattached individuals should pursue or connect with one another.

4) Do Not Become Intoxicated

While these rules are not easy, they are somewhat open to interpretation. Most ajarn do not expect lifelong sobriety to retain the power of a sak yant blessing. Instead, this rule emphasizes the importance of maintaining self-control. Having a drink is acceptable; becoming drunk, especially uncontrollably so, is not. Consider yourself warned!

5) Do Not Speak Ill of Your Family

The final rule focuses on family. Family holds immense importance in Thai culture. Many children do not leave the family home until marriage, and some stay well into adulthood. Showing respect, especially to one’s parents and elders, is crucial. You must not speak ill of or to those you love and are closest to.
